Thanks for taking the time to chat with SIW. Tell us a little bit about yourself and your blog.

Madhavi : Thanks for this opportunity. I am basically from Kerala, Bangalore is where my heart is, and Chennai is where now my home is. In spite of having a Masters in Commerce, my passion towards creativity and art made me change my direction. I started Craftziners as a blogger, and soon it expanded into a community where similar crafters could share their art and crafts. I love my website, and right now I’m in one of the best phases of my life with a beautiful daughter and a happy family.

What makes your blog so unique and why should people read it?

Madhavi : Craftziners was the first of its kind when it started, and it is now a community of more than 4000 members. It is an interactive community of artists and craft enthusiasts from all over the world. You can find a lot of resources in Craftziners about various art forms, including tutorials on how to do many of them. This is also an interactive community of a lot of creative artists. There are also a lot of expansion ideas in Craftziners which will be seen in the near future.

How often do you blog?

Madhavi : When I started Craftziners, I used to blog almost every day. Nowadays it’s not that easy to do, due to increased responsibilities on the work and family front, but I try to dedicate some time to it at least once a week.

What has been your most successful blog post to date and what was it about?

Madhavi : It’s hard to pick one, as there has been several posts. One of the posts which I remember is the Tanjore painting tutorial which became very famous. There was also a tutorial on how to do Ganesha mural which went on to be so popular that a lot of people all around the world replicated the work.

What do you find most challenging about blogging?

Madhavi : At times it is not easy to stick to a particular topic or niche because arts and crafts is a very wide topic. There is always something new to learn and see. But in one way, that is one reason why craftziners.com has so many topics and has developed itself into a good community. Another thing is finding the time to blog. Blogging needs to be a regular thing to do because your subscribers or readers would expect newer things from you, and a blogger should keep them engaged.

What are some of your favorite author blogs and why?

Madhavi : I read a lot of blogs dealing with art and crafts, so the list is endless. Tipjunkie.com is one of the websites which I visit regularly. Then there are sites like everythingetsy.com, Jewelsofsayuri.com, Craftaholicsanonymous.net, etc. which are in my list of favorites for their way of writing and the ideas they provide.

What are your favorite books that you would recommend SIW family?

Madhavi : I read a lot of fiction. Gone with the Wind and Harry Potter series top the list. I also pick up books on craft and hobbies which I come across. A few books in those lines would be the Reader’s Digest books such as Complete Guide to Sewing, Crafts & Hobbies, A to Z Series by Sue Gardener, and a few on home craft ideas.

Can we really make a living by Blogging? If yes, how we can do that?

Madhavi : You can make a living by blogging if you have good resourceful content that people love. There are a lot of programs like Google Adsense which help you make money by blogging. A widely known example is labnol.org, a blog which was started by Amit Agarwal in 2004, which now earns nearly 15 lakhs per month. Of course, it is not an easy task to reach these numbers, but it is certainly proof that a career in blogging is possible.

What advice would you give to young women readers of SIW who want to follow a similar career path as you?

Madhavi : Do what interests you. Until you enjoy what you’re doing, you won’t be able to do it with your whole heart. Also, make it a habit to read a lot and network with like-minded people. It is very important and will do a lot of good.
