Thanks for taking the time to chat with SIW. Tell us a little bit about yourself and your blog.
Srilakshmi : I’m a wife, and a mother to a little boy. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve loved cooking, and I loved food. My mother, my grandmother, my uncle, was all really great cooks, and I would always be in the kitchen when they cook. My excuse would supposedly be to help them, but actually it was to eat. But i didn’t get serious about cooking until after i got married, and that was when I actually started cooking, and all my passion started pouring out. I did bachelors in Computers in college, because I thought i was good at it, but realized it’s not what i want later. I have been in love with food and cooking all my life and i only realized it now.
My blog is all about my passion for cooking. I post recipes of the dishes that I make in my kitchen, old, authentic, family recipes to new recipes developed by me, or something I found in an old cook book. I wanted to create a place where I can write about food, about everything that makes a wonderful dish, the experience I have when I eat a particular dish. I also want to make it as easy as possible for people who visit my blog to understand a recipe, so I also make the instructions easy to follow.”
What makes your blog so unique and why should people read it?
Srilakshmi : There are many, many, MANY food blogs, and many talented food bloggers out there. But that didn’t stop me from making my own food blog. I wouldn’t call my blog ‘unique’, but i always try to post articles that are worth reading. Cooking is not a boring thing, as some people might think. It’s an art. It’s very interesting, and if you have a true passion, you will enjoy reading about food. That’s what i want people to experience when they read my content. ‘Flavors of my family’ is not my hobby, it’s not my ‘job’, and it’s my world. I work my butt off to make content that my readers will enjoy.
How often do you blog?
Srilakshmi : I love blogging, and I don’t have a specific schedule as to when I should blog. I just post whenever I feel like it. Whenever I make something in my kitchen that I really love, I will post it on my blog. I’m also a mother to a 7 month old boy, and don’t always get the time to blog, but I always try to find some time to take pictures, and write about the recipe or the dish, because I just love to do it.
What do you find most challenging about blogging?
Srilakshmi : Finding the time to blog.
What advice would you give to young women readers of SIW who want to follow a similar career path as you?
Srilakshmi : First of all, ask yourself if you are truly in love with what you’re doing. I believe absolutely that there is nothing wrong in making money from blogging. But don’t start a blog, a food blog at least, just with the intention of making money. I have only been blogging for a few months now, but I knew this even before I started the blog. Focus on the quality of your content, build your content, connect with your readers, and just love what you do. The most important thing is, don’t get discouraged. In the beginner days, it’s very easy to get discouraged. It’s easy to give up, but it’s even harder to start over again. Slowly, you will get more audience, and you can make a career out of it.
