Thanks for taking the time to chat with SIW. Tell us a little bit about yourself and your blog.
Sruthi : Delighted to be here on SIW, Thank you for having me!
I’m Sruthi Singh and I live in Virginia (USA) with my husband and 8 year old son. A financial consultant by profession, I also juggle being a small business owner, photographer, décor enthusiast and a fervent blogger at The East Coast Desi (TECD).
I started TECD with the intent to share my home decorating experiences. But TECD has grown to be so much more. With time it has evolved into a lifestyle blog that primarily focuses on global décor with a strong Indian undertone to it. It has also become synonymous as a platform to showcase emerging and established artists and brands. And if you’ve been on the lookout for chock-full of aesthetically pleasing imagery and color inspiration, head over to the TECD.
What makes your blog so unique and why should people read it?
Sruthi : The USP of the blog lies in its aesthetically pleasing images, doable decor ideas, never before seen home tours and an honest voice that tells it all!
How often do you blog?
Sruthi : I put out a minimum of two posts per week and keep things realistic and achievable for myself. But at times when inspiration strikes or the creative juices are flowing, I’ve managed to churn out up to five posts per week.
What has been your most successful blog post to date and what was it about?
Sruthi : The post featuring my very own living room decked up for Diwali, was very well received.
What do you find most challenging about blogging?
Sruthi : I find myself constantly having to shift gears between being a writer, photographer, décor stylist, interior designer, editor and a PR manager to generate a single post. Given that there are only 24 hours in a day and I have other commitments too, I sometimes find myself in a time crunch.
What are some of your favorite author blogs and why?
Sruthi : I love Décor8, Desire to Inspire, Apartmentf15, SF Girl by Bay, My Paradissi, The Jungalow. Oh! I can go on and on and on, there are so many inspiring, talented and creative people out there. I love that each one of them has a distinct style and authenticity that I admire.
What are your favorite books that you would recommend SIW family?
Sruthi : When it comes to design and décor related books, my two latest reads were Emily Henson’s new book “Bohemian Modern” and “Collected: Living with the Things You Love” by Fritz Karsh and Rebecca Robertson. Both these made for a good read with stunning visuals.
However, my must read list would be incomplete if I did not mention Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and The Essential Rumi by Jalal al-Din Rumi.
Can we really make a living by Blogging? If yes, how we can do that?
Sruthi : Up until now, I have not commercialized the aspect of blogging. I’ve only looked for rewards in terms of connecting with like-minded souls and inspiring and being inspired in return!
What advice would you give to young women readers of SIW who want to follow a similar career path as you?
Sruthi : In the context of blogging, I would say it is important to develop an individual/distinct style and make every effort to connect with your readers. And as long as you are passionate about what you blog, you are on the right track. But most importantly don’t forget to enjoy the creative journey!
