Hi Priyanka, thanks for taking the time to chat with SIW. Tell us a little bit about yourself and your work.
Priyanka : Buzzingbubs.com was launched on April 23, 2014 after prolonged initial thinking and planning, mainly to serve the interests of Parents with kids. We decided that a web based communication medium would be best suited to meet our objective of providing readable and interesting material which would be useful for the target audience. Since we are based at Bangalore, the city of focus for our work presently is Bangalore.
: We are two full time moms and first-time entrepreneurs who founded BuzzingBubs
•Priyanka Sehgal: Previously worked for a Lighting Consultancy Firm ( Available Light NY – now known as AWA Lighting Designers) & as a Freelance Interior Designer. Fine Art Graduate from Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai specialising in Interior Design.
•Sunena Saigal: A Post Graduate in Human Resources from Symbiosis, Pune. Previously worked as a User Interface Designer at Inter globe Technologies, New Delhi. Freelanced as a Graphic Designer after moving to Bangalore in 2005.
A word about the name Buzzingbubs. Many brainstorming sessions were needed to come out with the mot juste! We found the name peppy and catchy while It captured the ambience of the continuous buzz you feel whenever today’s kids are around!
What inspired you to get into this profession?
Priyanka : My elder son & Sunena’s son being almost of the same age, we found that between us, we had done a fair share of endless research – whether in finding the right toys, thinking of fun things to do on weekends, deciding on where to holiday or planning the perfect birthday party. We found that there was enormous satisfaction in doing things right, but paucity of specific information available at the right time to achieve what we would plan to do was indeed frustrating. A lot of generic commercial information was broadly available from various sources- but we felt they lacked that local and personal touch which makes a big difference.
All mothers we met seemed to have similar issues whether they were planning a birthday party or deciding on an outing. Very soon, we discovered that we were really in demand as source of trusted local information which they seemed to value!
Having gone through various available material, we felt that there was room for a medium which would give a different and refreshing experience to our community of parents. Sunena and I had very similar situation and needs- with kid of nearly same age, facing similar challenges due to lack of reliable and authentic local information. We certainly enjoy our work now which also gives us the pleasure to be hands on with our kids while we take them to ‘work’,as it were,
BuzzingBubs is meant to provide a platform for parents like us who value the time we spend with our kids by making it more fun, meaningful and memorable. Our goal is to provide varied content so that someone would find their niche area of interest which would be useful as a guide while looking for ideas to do something better with their kids. Our idea is to make it more interactive- where a section of our audience gives their feedback and even become contributors- if they came across a great idea!
What is your USP?
Priyanka : Our aim is to cut out the noise and provide accurate first hand information which would be useful from a parents’ perspective. Whether it’s recommending the most kid-friendly restaurants, http://buzzingbubs.com/bangalore/top-kid-friendly-restaurants or the best children’s parks in Bangalore; http://buzzingbubs.com/bangalore/things-to-do/parks-bangalore, or creating a guide for school admissions in Bangalore http://buzzingbubs.com/bangalore/school-admission-process-forms . We’ve captured and highlighted information that parents care about which give’s them a clear picture at a glance.
Our contributors are from different walks of life and, have helped us to cover as many perspectives as possible in this domain. Considering that today’s mother has many interests, we planned to create a holistic, well rounded content which might be of interest to persons with different perspectives. Our aim is to give emphasis to quality over quantity while we explore every area of relevance based on our own personal experience as mothers.
How someone can start the same business as yours in terms of investment, material procurement, production, and marketing etc?
Priyanka : Everything has to start with an urge to do something useful to as large a potential audience as possible. Being able to be self-financed helped us, but operating and personnel costs could be quite high indeed! Although we were not actually answerable to any external financiers, It has taken a lot of sleepless nights of working to keep up even with our own self-imposed goals. One should therefore be able to sustain such periods of sheer overpowering work loads and potential frustrations. We were able to combine as much fun as possible in our work, but it could be different with different lines of business..
Any challenge you are facing in your profession and how you overcome that?
Priyanka : Some of the challenges include balancing family time, grasping all the technicalities that come with running a website like learning wordpress, HTML tags. We wanted to get up & run quickly and hence chose WordPress, duly customized to suit our needs. We have paid special attention to make sure that our site is completely responsive to mobile devices as more than 60% of our users are accessing our content on their mobile devices. – all this we’ve been learning on the job. We were driven by our own convictions when we started and that’s what keeps us going.
What are your plans for the future?
Priyanka : We want to cover the needs of parents in Bangalore in depth and thereafter take it to other major cities in India.
How you manage your personal and professional life?
Priyanka : BuzzingBubs is officially shut on the weekends.Weekends are completely dedicated to our kids and family.
During week days, we try to get as much work done while the kids are at school. We also include our kids as much as possible during relevant field work.
What are your favorite books that you would recommend SIW family?
Priyanka : Founders Dilemma by Noam Wasserman . A must read for anyone whose contemplating on starting a new business.
What advice would you give to young women readers of SIW who want to follow a similar career path as you?
Priyanka : Initially, when we were brainstorming on features & the scope of the website, ideas really mushroomed and we ran the risk of opting for a big canvas which seemed overwhelming. At that moment, the best advice we got was to get started- no matter how simple and basic the first version of site would look like. We’re glad we took that advice to keep things simple at start, and have been incrementally improving the site ever since, one step at a time.
Believe in your idea no matter how simple it is. An idea, executed well is what makes a difference.
