Anitha turned her time pass craft into a home run venture, “Amrutha’s Craftie”

Thanks for taking the time to chat with SIW. Tell us a little bit about yourself and your blog.

Anitha: Myself Anitha Murugan from Chennai, Master’s degree holder in Computer Science and a creative person from childhood. Inspired by my mom’s handiworks, would spend my free time during schooling, doing different types of craft works with the stuff available at home. I do simple drawings, coloring, greeting cards, recycling, sewing, embroidery, crocheting, flower making and more. I started my career as an Executive at an MNC, worked for 7 years and took a break from work. As I had free time after quitting job, I focused on Crochet which is my passion. I Am a Certified Crochet Designer from Anchor.

What inspired you to start this business?

Anitha: Crochet is a process of creating a fabric just with hook and some type of material, most commonly yarn or thread. Besides, there was a concept that it is associated with aging grandmothers who used to crochet sweaters, scarves and shawls. I realized those products were no longer practical for my place, so started experimenting on it. I always wish my work stand unique from others, which stroked with an idea to revamp Crochet to contemporary needs. So I began making Crochet Jewelry to enhance their style statement. Created lot of designs and when posted in my facebook page, had a very good response which then, my time pass craft turned into a home run venture, “Amrutha’s Craftie”, to teach and market my Crochet work.

What is your USP?

Anitha: The products are designed with a lot of passion and craving of making them unique. The threads and materials used are of the best quality. The color combinations of all the products are unique and bright. Every design is completely hand crocheted by me. I put lot of time and effort to ensure each detailing in the product comes out perfectly. I customize according to customer’s choice of Design, Colour, and Size. I focus specifically on quality, outcome and high customer satisfaction. As my products are made with thread, they are eco-friendly, non-allergic and weightless.

Additionally, I provide valuable assistance and training to all those who want to give shape and expression to their creativity. One will be professionally guided through all steps to create beautiful accessories. There is no limit to the number of projects they create, at no additional cost. They are provided with a complete training package!

How someone can start the same business as yours in terms of investment, material procurement, production, and marketing etc?

Anitha: Time, Patience and Creativity are the foremost elements which have to be invested apart from money. Start with minimum investment and gain trust on quality among customers for your work. Update one with the emerging trends to meet customer demands. Craft materials are available everywhere and marketing can be done through fb pages and other online sites.

Any challenge you face in your profession and how you overcome that?

Anitha: Colors available are limited in any particular brand. It becomes a challenge sometimes to source the material, when customer needs a specific color.

What are your plans for the future?

Anitha: My future plan is to Crochet apparels for all ages, all types of accessories, embellish fabric with Crochet and expand my marketing to larger audience. Interested to explore on varied craft ideas.

How you manage your personal and professional life?

Anitha: It’s hard to balance both at times. I start my work finishing all my household chores. Best part of home venture is having flexible working hours. Every step in my success is achieved with the exceptional support and encouragement from my husband, a best critic, who also helps me in material procurement, photography, packing and dispatching.

What are your favorite books that you would recommend SIW family?
