Thanks for taking the time to chat with SIW. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Sowmya : Hello, I am Sowmya. I am Software Engineer by profession and settled with my family in Bangalore.

My hobbies include making and trying out different types of art and crafts like greeting cards and jewellery making using quilling, beads jewellery making and also cooking, dancing and singing.

Why do you knit/craft? How did you learn?

Sowmya : Craft started for me as a hobby during my academic studies. I learnt most of the craft skills from my mother. She taught me jewellery making and saree embroidery.

Quilling was an inspiration by seeing one of my friend’s craft and since then I haven’t stopped.

I have been continuously learning and making various types of quilling crafts like card making, jewellery making etc.

What are your can’t-live-without craft-room essentials?

Sowmya : The most essential craft-room essentials would be the white glue, scissors and materials required for the type of the craft being planned.

Eg. For a quilling earring you would require quilling strips, quilling needle, beads, sequins, earring loops.

Quilling and Loom Bands

How would you describe your style? Are there any crafters/artists/designers that you particularly look up to?

Sowmya : I don’t have any style in particular. I just love to learn and make different types of arts and crafts which will be useful and liked by people.

At this point, my mother is my inspiration and I know I can go to her for any craft related tips and help which I require.

What sorts of things are inspiring you right now? Where do you look for inspiration?

Sowmya : I watch different types of Art and Craft videos on computer and TV and learn many different varieties from them. I use my creativity and imagination upon the learning done.

What do you do to keep yourself, your space and your time organized?

Sowmya : Love what you do and always be happy . This surely motivates me to keep myself organized in all the ways is it at home or while at work.

What advice would you give to young women readers of SIW who want to follow a similar career path as you?

Sowmya : Be strong, confident and be yourself and share your knowledge and tips .. And if people feel they learn from you, they will come back.

Never give up on what you love doing and success will surely be yours.

Don’t hesitate to learn anything new… Learning is a continuous process…
